Golden Milk Turmeric Latte (dairy-free)

As a functional nutritionist, I have to refrain from cringing when someone says the word superfood. Too often this title gets misinterpreted and smacked onto foods as a marketing tool when it shouldn’t be.

The way food is marketed at the public, a belief has been created that certain foods make us lose weight or will cure conditions and diseases. I’m here to tell you that it’s a blatant lie. We need to blend variety, nutrient density, hormone balance, sleep, emotions, toxicity and a plethora of more factors to create health.

One golden milk turmeric latte isn’t going to cure your inflammation problem. The root of just about all dysfunction and disease in the body lies within inflammation. And while turmeric is super in the fact that it likely is the most powerful compound in nature to fight inflammation, you need to relieve your body of the elements causing inflammation in the first place. For some inflammation is rooted in poor diet, using toxic self-care products, or stress among other lifestyle factors.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 - 2 cups water or sprouted nut milk

  • 1” fresh turmeric*, skin removed

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

  • pinch of nutmeg

  • 2 tablespoons grass-fed beef gelatin

  • 1 tablespoon sprouted nut butter*

* You can substitute fresh turmeric with 1 teaspoon dried ground turmeric

* Omit sprouted nut butter if using nut milk instead of water

Method

Remove skin from fresh turmeric while you bring water or nut milk to a simmer. Add knob of turmeric to a blender along with water or nut milk. Using a high-speed blender, blend on high until smooth.

If using fresh turmeric, place a fine mesh strainer or cheese cloth above your mug and pour liquid through straining mechanism. This step is key to a smooth latte as piece of turmeric might not be liquified. Add liquid back to blender.

To the blender add cinnamon, nutmeg, gelatin, and sprouted nut butter if using.
